Speaking to Tasnim on Tuesday, commander of the Iranian Border Police in the province of Kurdistan said the troops serving in the border regiment of Marivan have clashed with a group of gunmen who were trying to cross the border on Monday night.

The armed clash took place when the Iranian troops were patrolling the borderline in ‘Darre-Nakhi’ region near Marivan, General Alireza Marzbani said.

The border guards inflicted heavy losses on the anti-Revolution armed elements in the clash, the commander noted, adding that one of the Iranian officers, Lieutenant Hossein Namvar, was wounded in the gunfight, but succumbed to injuries after being taken to the hospital.

General Marzbani said the intruders fled to the mountainous areas on the other side of the border after encountering a courageous counterattack from the border guards.

In July 2018, anti-revolution terrorists attacked a border post of the Hamzeh Seyed al-Shohada Base in Marivan, killing 11 forces of the base.

The Iranian Border Police, the IRGC Ground Force, and the Army Ground Force are tasked with protecting Iran’s land borders.

Iran has more than 6,000 kilometers of common borders with Afghanistan, Pakistan, Turkmenistan, Turkey, the Republic of Azerbaijan, Armenia, and Iraq on the ground.
